The trimming Tara performs is a non-invasive, barefoot trimming method which mimics the natural wear patterns of the hooves of the wild, free-roaming horses living in natural horse habitat such as the U.S Great Basin. The trimming Tara performs only removes hoof material that nature would naturally remove in the wild which encourages positive traits in the hoof such as no deviations in hoof wall angles, natural concavity, uniform hoof wall thickness and a ’mustang roll’ around the distal edge of the hoof wall which all lead to healthier, stronger hooves.
By incorporating more natural diet and management practices in conjunction with conducting a natural trim, natural growth patterns emerge to create more naturally shaped hooves. This improved hoof shape and function supports more natural movement in the horses and reinforces the natural gaits of the horse ensuring a longer and more comfortable working life. Without pain free, fully functioning hooves the horses’ body will never be able to move correctly and efficiently and without a properly functioning body the hooves will never grow correctly. It is essential to fix both the body and the hooves to have a horse that can reach its full potential.
It is essential to have the owners on board as without the critical components of diet and management (lifestyle, riding/exercise, socialization/exhibiting natural behaviours) then the horse is not going to be able to be truly healthy and the hooves will not heal and function as soundly as they possibly can. Horse owners are encouraged to ask questions, learn about and be a very prominent part of the hoof care for their horses.
Tara has a lot of experience in the rehabilitation of ‘problem’ hooves and she specializes in rehabilitating the hooves of horses, ponies and donkeys that have issues such as acute or chronic laminitis/founder, navicular syndrome, seedy toe/white line disease, contracted heels, chronic thrush, cracks/splitting, under-run heels and thin soles to name a few.
Horses/ponies/donkeys that are in need of intensive care can begin their rehabilitation at Tara’s property. This allows for the animal to receive bodywork, hoof care and be put onto new diets etc. and give the owners’ time to prepare for the animals return.
